Passport with stamped visa for ETIAS travel requirement

ETIAS: Europe’s New Travel Requirement for Australians

Did you know that starting in 2025, Australians will need to meet a new requirement for travel to Europe? ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) will be essential for entry into the Schengen Area, enhancing security and streamlining travel across 30 European countries. You don’t want to be refused entry for your dream holiday, so here’s what you need to know to prepare for this important change!

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization, not a visa, introduced as a safety measure to pre-screen travelers from visa-exempt countries like Australia before entering the Schengen Area. Valid for three years or until your passport expires, ETIAS allows multiple short-term entries. However, having a valid ETIAS does not guarantee entry; all travelers are subject to border checks, and local border officials can deny entry if they do not meet specific conditions outlined by Schengen regulations.

Schengen Area Countries Requiring ETIAS

ETIAS allows travel to the 30 Schengen countries, including:

  • Western Europe: France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria, and Switzerland.
  • Southern Europe: Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Malta.
  • Northern Europe: Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Iceland.
  • Eastern and Central Europe: Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
  • Southeastern Europe: Croatia and Bulgaria.

This permits seamless travel across multiple Schengen destinations on a single ETIAS authorization.

How to Apply for ETIAS

Australians will need:

  • Valid Passport: Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your stay.
  • Online Application: This online form includes details like personal information and security questions.
  • Application Fee: A small fee of approximately €7 (around $12 AUD) applies, with exceptions for travellers under 18 and over 70.

Once submitted, the ETIAS application is processed quickly, typically within minutes. However, we recommend applying for ETIAS before even booking your trip, and at least 96 hours prior to your flight, to avoid any potential delays. If you don’t apply in time, you risk being unable to board your flight or being denied entry at the border, potentially ruining your holiday.

Key Information About ETIAS

  • Launch Date: ETIAS is expected around early or mid-2025, though the exact start date is unconfirmed. We’ll update this blog as soon as the EU provides a definitive timeline.
  • Short Stays Only: ETIAS is for short-term visits (up to 90 days for tourism, business, or transit).
  • Border Procedures: While ETIAS streamlines entry, border authorities have the final say, with the right to ask additional questions or deny entry if necessary.

What About the UK?

Unlike the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom is not part of ETIAS. The UK has its own system, known as the UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), which is similar in purpose but separate from ETIAS.

From 8 January 2025, Australian passport holders entering the UK will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This requirement applies to all travelers from visa-exempt countries, including Australia.

  • Countries in the United Kingdom: The UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
  • Application Date for Australians: Australians can begin applying for the UK ETA starting 27 November 2024.
  • Cost: The exact fee for the UK ETA has not yet been confirmed but is expected to be a small, affordable amount.

Where to Apply for ETIAS and UK ETA

You can apply for ETIAS and UK ETA through their respective official platforms:

  • ETIAS:
  • UK ETA:
    • Website: Applications for the UK ETA can be submitted via the official UK Government website closer to the launch date.
    • Mobile App: A mobile app may be introduced to facilitate the application process.

Final Thoughts

ETIAS and the UK ETA will soon be crucial requirements for Australians traveling to Europe and the UK, making travel more secure and efficient. Ensure you add these to your travel checklist and prepare in advance so you can enjoy exploring Europe’s diverse destinations without disruption. Stay updated, and we’ll provide further information as we approach the official launch of these systems!
